2015- 2016 a memorable year for the CAFP Ottawa Branch. As is the case in most organizations where membership is not compulsory, we are cognizant that membership and attendance could use some attention and focus. One of our strategies to rejuvenate our existing members is our upcoming trip to Italy, where we are planning on doing a culinary tour in September 2017. There has been money set aside to offset the cost of the trip. Also members can earn points toward the trip by achieving perfect attendance, participation in the Executive, attending the national conference and helping with fundraising!
Our first meeting of 2015-16 was hosted at Ital Foods, a local food distributor. Our guest speaker was Chef Cynthia (Cindy) Toffanello, who presented a cooking demo. Little did we know Chef Toffanello was a member of CAFP years ago and would become a dynamic member of our branch and instrumental to re-emgage the Algonquin student branch!
We have reached out and have a joint meeting with the local CCFCC branch. Each year it ends up being one of our largest meetings and it keeps us connected to the Hospitality portion of our industry .
We engaged local Human Resource Professionals, for a wonderful presentation of facts, facets and best practices of managing people.
A highlight of the CAFP year is our Conference. Located in Kananaskis this year, one would think it would be difficult for Ottawa to have a strong presence at conference, but the Ottawa branch had 9 members attend. A challenge to all the smaller branches?
From our rejuvenated Student branch, Marnie Watson was the recipient of $2000.00 in bursaries. At Conference, with some last minute ingenuity, the Algonquin Student branch pulled together a wonderful trade show presentation.
CFE- Credentialed Food Service Executive, was awarded to two individuals at Conference. Congratulations Sarah Hatt, CFE and Darren Shackleton, CFE.
We were so proud to award the Ottawa branch FEY- Food Service Executive of the Year, to Frances Furmankiewicz . We were even prouder that Frances was one of three finalists for the entire country of highly successful professionals.
So what is next? 2016- 2017- Our Awards night is going to be another huge success with a little surprise. November is sure to be a meeting that will leave a memory or two. Our Student branch promises to increase in size and numbers dramatically. Let’s hope for a record attendance at conference, some exceptional professional development and a few new faces.
If you are in the Ottawa area on a meeting night, please come and join us.
