With an organization mission focused on education and communication, the Halifax/Dartmouth Branch of CAFP works to offer lively and entertaining education sessions on current hot topics within the foodservice industry. In addition, these sessions offer opportunities for networking and social interaction combined with some great culinary and venue adventures.
The Branch has strong roots dating back to the Charter Dinner held November 22, 1976. Professional branch members are joined by 2 energetic and dynamic Student Branches, active not only on Campus but with the Professional Branch, participating in Executive meetings and education programs. Each year the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) and Acadia University Student Branches extend an invitation to the Professional Branch to attend an evening of education and dining organized and hosted by the students. It is an event not to be missed! This strong relationship with the Student Branch provides opportunities for professional development and networking, mutually beneficial to both groups. The MSVU Student Branch won the National Student Branch of the Year in 2009 & 2010 and, in 2011, Vanessa MacLellan (Yurchesyn), the 2010-2011 Student Branch President became the National Gold Plate Award winner. In 2014, Meghan Todd, Acadia Student Branch President was the National Gold Plate Award winner.
In 2010, the Halifax/Dartmouth Branch lost a valued member, Bob Taylor. His impact on the industry and its members resulted in donations that form the Bob Taylor Memorial Scholarship. Two scholarships are awarded annually. One to eligible students who are active members of a CAFP Student Branches for MSVU, Acadia and St.F.X and the other to a student enrolled in a recognized culinary program in NS.
